The use of imagery and figurative language in Shakespeare’s sonnet â€Å"Shall I compare Thee to a summer’s Day and Owen’s war poem â€Å"Dulce et Decorum Est.† The poems â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day, by William Shakespeare’s and Dulce et Decorum â€Å" by Owen’s are two poems in which their poets makes extensive use of imagery and figurative language. By definition, an imagery is a word or phrase that describes senses (feel, hear, smell, taste and sight), while a figurative language which include devices such as metaphor, symbols, personification, alliteration and similes are used in poems to help the speakers convey their ideas and to help their readers access these ideas. The writers of both poems uses this technique differently in other to helps readers to understand what was going on. In Shakespeare’s poem, â€Å"Shall I Compare Thee to a summer’s Day.† the poem is a fourteen line sonnet, written about the beauty of the speaker beloved. Shakespeare’s uses different literary techniques in order to enable readers to be able to picture a vivid image of the woman being talked about. He started off by comparing the women which he refers to as â€Å"Thee† in the poem to a Summer’s day, by using the metaphor,† Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day.† Using this device, he compares the beauty of the women to that of a summer’s day with the idea that the woman is more beautiful and hot.
